Baptism for Older Children

For children over 8 years of age; either unbaptized, or baptized in another faith tradition and converting to Catholicism. *The sacraments are accessible to all persons of all abilities.

“The Christian initiation of children requires both a conversion that is personal and somewhat developed, in proportion to their age, and the assistance of the education they need. The process of initiation thus must be adapted both to their spiritual progress, that is, to the children’s growth in faith, and to the catechetical instruction they receive. Accordingly, their initiation is to be extended over several years, if need be, before they receive the sacraments.” (RCIA, #253)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Children is a process intended to prepare your child or teen with a fundamental knowledge of Jesus as they are ‘initiated’ into the Catholic Church through Baptism (which washes away sin and adopts us into the family of God), Confirmation (which seals us with the Holy Spirit, our helper and guide) and Eucharist (which nourishes us through holy communion with Christ; the bread of life).  These Sacraments of Initiation are the beginning, equipping the new Christian so that they may “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18

WHERE TO BEGIN:

  • Please call or email Dorothy Hulburt, DCM to set up an introductory meeting. At that time we will consider the particular needs of your family and determine together how best to proceed.
  • Join or continue your participation in our parish faith formation through Children’s Religious Education (CRE), our Parish School, Youth Ministry or home schooling according to their regular grade level.  This serves as an introduction to Christ, providing a foundational understanding of what it means to be Catholic.
  • Participate in the life of the Church, particularly Sunday Mass. Joining the community in worship and fellowship will help you to feel at home in the family of faith.
