“You are my companion and must walk with me. For if we hold together no earthly power can withstand us.”
St. Dominic to St. Francis of Assisi, his good friend
I love this about the saints. They had family, they had friends, they even had best friends. And just like the saints, we all need friends and “holy companions” who walk this journey with us. Because “where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there with them.” What a promise!
Who is your “holy companion” your “bestie”, your “kindred spirit” in the Lord?
Today is the FEAST OF ST. DOMINIC, seems like is a good day to send up a grateful thank-you to Jesus and to them for such a gift.

Tap into the power of faith
"The power of faith is enormous," Church Father Cyril of Jerusalem declared. "It is so great that it not only saves the believer: thanks to one person's faith others are saved also." But what does it mean to have this special power? Faith isn't about believing items listed in a creed. It's not about acceding to doctrines or to church authorities. Faith means trusting in God the way a child takes the hand of a beloved guardian and allows herself to be led in perfect confidence. "All shall be well," Julian of Norwich avowed. Share this faith that "all manner of things shall be well."

Beloved:
We did not follow cleverly devised myths
when we made known to you
the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For he received honor and glory from God the Father
when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory,
“This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable.
You will do well to be attentive to it,
as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

At home in a house church
Christians first gathered in homes, or “house churches,” before there were dedicated religious buildings. Remember the “upper room” where the disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit? It was likely one of the first house churches. As Christians were able to more freely express their faith, churches were built. One of the most historic and significant churches is the Basilica of Mary Major in Rome. It was built out of deep love of Mary and her significance in salvation history. It holds many important relics, works of art, and the sacred experiences of pilgrims since the fifth century. What is a church that has been especially meaningful for you?

TODAY'S READINGS: Nahum 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7; Matthew 16:24-28.

Founders Chapel at USD holds a very special place in my heart.
Mary, loving Mother of Jesus, cover with your protection all parish priests.
May they be like St. John Vianney, their patron saint, and know with certainty that you are “like a good mother who, not content with looking after all her children in general, watches over each one separately.”
Be comfort and courage for them in difficult times. Watch over them as you watched over your Son…these men who are called to be the living image of Jesus, and who bring Him to us in Word and Sacrament.
Be their Mother. Be their light and strength and consolation in this life. Their joy and happiness in the next.
Prayer by Sr. Julia and quote by St. John Vianney, patron of priests whose feast is today.
