Nov. 3 is the feast day of St. Martin de Porres. He was born in Lima, Peru, the illegitimate son of a Spanish knight, John de Porres, and a freed Panamanian slave named Anna. In 1594, Martin became a Dominican lay brother in Lima and served in various menial offices. Outside of the monastery he became known for his care of the poor and the sick. Martin founded an orphanage and ministered to African slaves brought to Lima. He was aided by St. Rose of Lima, who respected his penances and labors. Martin experienced many mystical gifts, including bilocation and aerial flights. When he was dying in Rosary Convent on November 3, the viceroy, the count of Chichon, knelt by his bed, seeking Martin’s blessing. Martin, who is the patron of interracial justice, was canonized by Blessed Pope John XXIII (r. 1958-1963) in 1962.

Gospel of the Day (Matthew 5,1-12a)
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.

On this All Hallows’ Eve, what might it look like to center our humanity? To let this day not be an interruption in our real, important lives and work of justice and love—but an expression of it? On this day when children dress up as monsters (and heroes) and we offer them sweets, what would it look like to allow it to be an expression of honoring each other’s humanity? To let these costumes be a visual for how we can tend to go through our days and weeks, encountering others (scary or silly or made-up-gorgeous), but still deeply human inside it all?
Who are the ones you tend to see as monsters or villains in the story, even if you’d never say it that way? What would it be to let them, too, be human in this moment? To offer them sweetness and kindness as they pass through your small space in this world? Even in the midst of all the difficult realities surrounding us, how might you lean into love and honor—for your own self (in whatever costume *you* tend to wear in your life) and for other beloved human ones (Yes, even him. Yes, even her.), even if you still cannot agree with them on so many things? What is God inviting you to *this* day?
