The importance of prayer is reflected in Evangelium vitae (100), which says, “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer” (Evangelium vitae 100). May that prayer arise in our hearts today and each day forward until every human being is protected in law and welcomed in love. ... See MoreSee Less

213. The dignity of others is to be respected in all circumstances, not because that dignity is something we have invented or imagined, but because human beings possess an intrinsic worth superior to that of material objects and contingent situations. This requires that they be treated differently. That every human being possesses an inalienable dignity is a truth that corresponds to human nature apart from all cultural change. For this reason, human beings have the same inviolable dignity in every age of history and no one can consider himself or herself authorized by particular situations to deny this conviction or to act against it.

Embracing your inner apostle
How many apostles did Jesus call? If you said 12, well, you are sort of correct. Indeed, Jesus appointed 12 followers to be his close companions, to learn from him, and to preach the Good News. But it doesn’t stop at 12. Jesus continues to call forth apostles in the church. We have bishops who continue the mission via the tradition of apostolic succession. We also have every single person in the church, including you! “The whole church is apostolic, in that she remains . . . in communion of faith and life with her origin: and in that she is ‘sent out’ into the whole world,” says the Catechism of the Catholic Church. How will you respond to your call to apostleship?
TODAY'S READINGS: Hebrews 8:6-13 Mark 3:13-19.
“Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him.”

Supporting one another through difficult times can be an incredibly impactful way for the Lord to work through us. Don't be afraid to reach out when you notice someone in need, especially in the case of vulnerable mothers, and persons in need of special care, support, or assistance. ... See MoreSee Less

Why is it, Lord, that I so quickly
see the problem,
call to mind the hurt,
rehearse the pain,
dwell on my mistakes,
fret and stew in worry
and feed upon my fear?
Why is it, Lord, that I'm so slow
to see your grace,
treasure peaceful moments,
hold fast to every healing,
listen for your whisper,
lean upon your strength,
and drop my troubled heart
into your open, loving hands?
Lift me up, O Lord,
from all that keeps me down...
Open wide my eyes to see
the beauty of your face...
Lift my hands and heart
to you in prayer...
Open up my ears
to your Spirit's voice within...
Touch my mind and heart
where I'm most in need of healing...
Remind me every day
of my blessings, old and new...
Give me strength to live
one day,
one hour,
one minute at a time...
Lift me up, O Lord, out of
all that keeps me down
and let my spirit rise to find its joy
in you and in your love...
Amen.

Spiritual Reading
Spiritual reading is not only reading about spiritual people or spiritual things. It is also reading spiritually, that is, in a spiritual way! Reading in a spiritual way is reading with a desire to let God come closer to us.
The purpose of spiritual reading . . . is not to master knowledge or information but to let God’s Spirit master us. Strange as it may sound, spiritual reading means to let ourselves be read by God!
Spiritual reading is reading with an inner attentiveness to the movement of God’s Spirit in our outer and inner lives. With that attentiveness, we will allow God to read us and to explain to us what we are truly about.
-Henri Nouwen
