Lord, we thank You for all who have given their lives for freedom, justice and peace. May we never take their sacrifice for granted.
We pray for those who grieve for their lost loved ones, that You will give them comfort and strength in their heartache.
Help us to pause in the midst of a busy Memorial Day and be grateful for the sacrifices made for us.
“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

“BRING THEM TO JESUS”
When we are truly teaching a relationship with Jesus and cultivating faith oriented relationships with the same dedication as we give to math facts or spelling words or drills on a sports field, we give our children a world that is brighter, kinder and full of hope. Bring them to Jesus.

We’re here to honor those who went to war
Who did not wish to die, but did die, grievously,
In eighteen sixty-one and in two-thousand four
Though they were peaceable as you or me.
Young and innocent, they knew nothing of horror —
Singers and athletes, and all in all well-bred.
Their sergeants, mercifully, made them into warriors,
And at the end, they were moving straight ahead.
As we look at these headstones, row on row on row,
Let us see them as they were, laughing and joking,
On that bright irreverent morning long ago.
And once more, let our hearts be broken.
God have mercy on them for their heroic gift.
May we live the good lives they would have lived.

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Mark 10:13–16), Jesus declares that the kingdom of God belongs to children: “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
How so? Well, children are like stars or flowers or animals, things that are what they are, unambiguously, uncomplicatedly. They are in accord with God’s deepest intentions for them. The challenge of the spiritual life is to realize what God wants us to be—to find out what is in line with the deepest grain of our being—and thereby come to the same simplicity and directness in our existence.
Let me put this another way: children haven’t yet learned how to look at themselves. Why can a child immerse himself so eagerly and thoroughly in what he is doing? Because he can lose himself; because he is not looking at himself, conscious of the reactions, expectations, and approval of those around him. The best moments in life are when we lose ourselves in the world and just are as God wants us to be.
-Bishop Robert Barron
Gospel of the Day (Mark 10,13-16)
People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

When we try to pray, sometimes we walk on water and sometimes we sink like a stone. Sometimes we have a deep sense of God’s reality and sometimes we can’t even imagine that God exists. Sometimes we have deep feelings about God’s goodness and love and sometimes we feel only boredom and distraction. Prayer has a huge ebb and flow.

‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.’
As always on this first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This is the central mystery of our faith – our God, one in three persons, in whose name we were all welcomed at our baptism.
In the Gospel this Sunday we see the risen Jesus handing on to the disciples their mission of baptising people throughout the world in the name of the Trinity. He reminds them, and ourselves, that he remains with us always.
This week, we pray that, filled with God’s Spirit, we will be ready to share the Trinity’s message of love and belonging with the people we meet.

So beautiful.
On Memorial Day, we honor and pray for all those who sacrificed their lives in the cause of justice, freedom and security. We pray for their families and friends who mourn their loss. And always, we pray for peace.
If you are remembering someone this Memorial day, add their names in the comments that we might remember them with you and hold all in our prayers...
