Saint John Chrysostom was a priest given the nickname Chrysostom - “Golden Mouth” for his preaching. He wrote of the gifts of friendship.
When we think about poverty, we usually think of the poor in material things. But we can have a poverty of spirit, too- hard times, loneliness, heavy worries or illness.
St John Chrystosom said, “With friends, even poverty is pleasant. Words cannot express the joy a friend imparts. It would be better for us that the sun were exhausted than that we should be without friends.”
Take time to thank God for the special friends in your life today.
And remember, He calls us friends.

As we begin Holy Week this Sunday, our readings take us from the joy and Hosannas of Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem to a profound contemplation of his suffering and death.
In the Gospel of Palm Sunday we hear the Passion narrative of St Matthew, in which Jesus is betrayed, mocked, denied, accused and crucified. His body is laid in the tomb, and a guard is placed to secure it.

This week, may we follow Christ in his Passion, holding each other, and our suffering and tortured world, in prayer. May Mary be with us in this journey and help us understand the value of following the example of her Son in our living and our loving.

    Help your unbelief

Can a believer doubt? It can be a relief to learn that a whole school of thought among Catholic theologians asserts that doubt, while seemingly corrosive, can actually bolster faith in the end. Doubt can lead to exploration, which often leads to better understanding, greater clarity, or sometimes simply a willingness to not know, to live without all questions fully answered, leaning into religious practice with an open heart. Most would call that an adult faith. What questions nag at you? Doubt, dig, and remain open to God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 17:3-9; John 8:51-59. "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death." #takefiveforfaith

You are invited to download our 2023 Earth Day program, "Simple Living: God's Vision of Abundant Life!" This resource contains prayers, readings, a video, discussion questions, and suggested actions.

Consider using this program in your Catholic community to commemorate #EarthDay or the anniversary of #LaudatoSi, and discover ways to live more simply, more sustainably, and more "abundantly".

    Download the program here: catholicclimatecovenant.salsalabs.org/earthday2023downloadform/index.html

“Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
who sent his angel to deliver the servants who trusted in him”
    Daniel 3:95
    #dailyingodsword
Here’s a bit of fun prompted by the days first reading.
If you are a child of the late 60’s-‘70’s you may well remember this popular song. And if you do, it’s probably stuck in your head now.

    Jesus is a soul man,
    Jesus is a soul man,
    Jesus is a soul man,
And I'm sure sold on Him.

Oh they say that he's a square,
    That Jesus, He ain't nowhere.
I know better, He lives in my heart.
    Jesus is a soul man.

You can find Him in the Bible pages.
Jesus - he's the rock of ages.
Hides me in the cleft of the rock.
    Jesus is a soul man.

He calms the waves when the storm is ragin'.
Keeps me safe when the devils ravin'.
He's my staff, he's my sword and my shield.
    Jesus is a soul man.

    Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
The king, he said, In the fire you must go.
He found out that the fire wouldn't burn em.
They were saved by the soul man.

*Read Daniel 3, and the wondrous litany of praise amidst the fire that Abednigo sang.

Here’s a bit of fun prompted by the days first reading.
If you are a child of the late 60’s-‘70’s you may well remember this popular song. And if you do, it’s probably stuck in your head now.

Jesus is a soul man,
Jesus is a soul man,
Jesus is a soul man,
And Im sure sold on Him.

Oh they say that hes a square,
That Jesus, He aint nowhere.
I know better, He lives in my heart.
Jesus is a soul man.

You can find Him in the Bible pages.
Jesus - hes the rock of ages.
Hides me in the cleft of the rock.
Jesus is a soul man.

He calms the waves when the storm is ragin.
Keeps me safe when the devils ravin.
Hes my staff, hes my sword and my shield.
Jesus is a soul man.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
The king, he said, In the fire you must go.
He found out that the fire wouldnt burn em.
They were saved by the soul man.

    For a non-violent culture – The Pope Video 4 – For a non-violent culture – The Pope Video 4 – April 2023
Let us all resolve to strongly support non-violence. As the Pope says, “Living, speaking, and acting without violence is not surrendering, losing or giving up anything, but aspiring to everything.” This year marks the 60th anniversary of St. John XXIII’s Encyclical Pacem in Terris, and Francis brings the message of this encyclical back to the forefront by reminding us that “Any war, any armed confrontation, always ends in defeat for all.” In his April video, produced by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, he makes a request at the end: “Let us make non-violence a guide for our actions, both in daily life and in international relations”.

Help your unbelief Can a believer doubt? It can b Help your unbelief

“Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let’s not be afraid to receive each day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.” - Henri Nouwen
Happy birthday to Saint John Neumann today—nickn Happy birthday to Saint John Neumann today—nicknamed the “little bishop” not only for his stature but for the humility that came from his Redemptorist vow of poverty, which he honored even after becoming bishop of Philadelphia. Neumann’s simplicity invites rich reflection for Lent. “Our great mistake is that we allow ourselves to be deceived by the spirit of worldly shrewdness, the desire for fame, and the love of comfort,” he wrote to a fellow priest. “The principles of faith fade out of our hearts in proportion as we allow the principles of the world to come in.” Simplify your life to make more room for what feeds your faith.
