Sept. 5 is the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Calcutta. The order she founded has a strong presence in our border region. In San Diego, contemplative Missionaries of Charity have lived in the Southcrest neighborhood for 31 years.

They contribute to the life of St. Jude of the Shrine West Parish, which is steps away from their expanded convent, which opened in 2017 and features a statue to their founder.

A day to remember those who gave everything…

Today, the anniversary of the largest terrorist attack in American history, is a day to call to mind those who rushed in to help, at great cost. The first certified fatality of the attacks was Father Mychal Judge, Franciscan friar and New York City Fire Department chaplain, who rushed to the World Trade Center to help. During his life, he was known for ministering to the marginalized and for the words on a prayer card he often distributed: “Lord, take me where you want me to go. Let me meet who you want me to meet. Tell me what you want me to say. And keep me out of your way.” Honor his legacy and make his humble prayer yours today.

TODAY'S READINGS: Colossians 1:24-2:3; Luke 6:6-11. “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?”

Conversion has two elements for its completion. Fi Conversion has two elements for its completion. First, we need to rid ourselves of the things that hinder gospel living. That includes not only “stuff” but also habits, attitudes, mindsets, lifestyles etc. that hinder hearing and living the Gospel. Secondly, conversion calls us to commit our lives to Jesus and his gospel call. It calls for practicing charity, having hope, learning how to love all people.
