Question of the Week
Gospel Reading: Mark 10:17—30
Jesus says that it is pretty much impossible (as hard as camels going through the eye of a needle) for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God. Why should that be? The answer is: when a person has plenty, it is almost impossible not to count on money to cover our needs. When we have money we don’t need to depend on the help of others. We depend on money for what? Transportation, shelter, food, doing good, entertainment, health, education, comfort…what aspects of our lives are there in which we do not depend, at least partly, on money to make them work right?
And yet Jesus says that wealth is a problem, rather than a help.
What DOES help us to find the Kingdom of God? St. Teresa of Avila said, “In the measure you desire Him you will find Him.” Therefore if we desire him above all things, including comfort, health, satisfactions—then we will find him in his fullness. If we desire him as one aspect of our lives among many, we will not find him; he won’t be found that way. When we are comfortable we don’t yearn so much for Jesus. It is mainly the profoundly uncomfortable who put all their life’s longing into the search for Jesus.
Question: What would increase the yearning in my heart for Jesus?
