Question of the Week
Gospel Reading: Mark 9:30—37
Jesus’ disciples were no different from us. They were concerned with their own needs, their status, how they were seen in the world. Why should we be surprised that they were feeling the pull of competition among themselves? Don’t we sometimes worry that someone else is getting accolades that I think belong to me? –or that nobody noticed what I did well? –or think that I am more virtuous than that person?
In his firm but gentle rebuke, Jesus showed them—and us—what is truly valuable to shoot for in our lives: simplicity of heart, service to others, not looking at ourselves at all, but at the needs of other people, receiving the humble and needy in our lives.
Question: Who are the people in my life that I am called to serve? What can I do for them that I put off because other things seem more interesting?
