“Let it be unto me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). Mary gives her yes to God’s will, out of love, consenting to let God intervene in a most extraordinary way in her own life.
God has tremendous plans for our lives that He has known since time began. It’s quite remarkable and we cannot fully grasp this in our time on earth. Listen how comforting these Scripture quotes are from a couple of Old Testament prophets: “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” (Jer 29:11) and “Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands” (Is 49:15-16).
How do you listen for the call of God in your life?

A sower went out to sow his seed.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was trampled,
and the birds of the sky ate it up.
Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew,
it withered for lack of moisture.
Some seed fell among thorns,
and the thorns grew with it and choked it.
And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew,
it produced fruit a hundredfold.”
After saying this, he called out,
“Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear…
This is the meaning of the parable.
The seed is the word of God.
Those on the path are the ones who have heard,
but the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts
that they may not believe and be saved.
Those on rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear,
receive the word with joy, but they have no root;
they believe only for a time and fall away in time of temptation.
As for the seed that fell among thorns,
they are the ones who have heard, but as they go along,
they are choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life,
and they fail to produce mature fruit.
But as for the seed that fell on rich soil,
they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart,
and bear fruit through perseverance.

MEMORIALS OF ROBERT BELLARMINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH AND
HILDEGARD OF BINGEN, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Listen to your doctors
Jesus’ ministry was simple: He went from town to town telling people that they were loved. The mantle, picked up by the doctors of the church, including those we honor today, was to interpret Jesus’ message for subsequent generations. Saint Robert Bellarmine’s Catechism clarified the Catholic understanding of faith and reason, and Saint Hildegard of Bingen’s songs, such as “O virtus sapientie,” helped unlock the mysteries of Divine Love and the Trinity. The Good News is meant for you. Find a way to hear it.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Timothy 6:2c-12; Luke 8:1-3. "Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God."

The cross is not easy to grasp intellectually. The deeper things in life, love, fidelity, morality, and faith are not mathematics, but mysteries whose unfathomable depths always leave room for more still to be understood. We never quite arrive at an adequate understanding of them.
But that doesn’t mean that we don’t know them. Knowing is different than understanding and we intuit a lot more than we can intellectually imagine or express.
